Hi All
After a good deal of blood, sweat and tears, I've gotten the basic
shape recognition engine out. Try it here:
http://guess.pixelglow.com/recog/
The recognizer feeds off statistics generated by all the shapes and
lines you've drawn over the last few weeks, so it's as much your
blood, sweat and tears as it is mine. I need to tweak the sensitivity
of various shapes so I'll need your feedback -- e.g. if you drew a
diamond and it got recognized as a square instead.
Also, inspired by Daniel's suggestions, I've included a multi-stroke
switch. If you switch it on, then Recog will delay 1/2 a second to see
if you'll draw another stroke -- this way you can build a shape by
using 2 or more strokes. The downside is the recognition itself will
be delayed by 1/2 a second. I'm *not* including an actual switch or
option in the final Instaviz (unless persuaded otherwise...), so I'd
like your opinions on which feels more natural to you, and I'll take
that as the basis for the Instaviz shape recognition.
Do try it out and send the mailing list your feedback. There's no
server submission in this app so the only way I'll know what you think
is when you *tell* me what you think.
Once you try out this app, you should stop submitting shapes and lines
through Guesstur and Edgie respectively.
The twin engines powering Instaviz (Recog, the shape recognizer, and
Graphviz*, the graph layout library) are now ready. It's time to build
the machine!
Cheers, Glen Low

* -- in a sense, Graphviz has been ready since, um, 1990, being an
AT&T project. I've only recently written plugins to interface with
Instaviz and rebuilt the lot for the iPhone.
