There is Ryan Schmidt's Canviz (probably a pun on "canvas" since it  
uses the canvas object on FF and Safari to draw Graphviz graphs). He's  
also on the list so perhaps he'd like to talk a little about it too.

One of the distinctives of Instaviz is difficult to replicate on a  
desktop or general browser platform. Based on feedback on a shape  
recognition experiment I ran one or two years ago, most people find it  
difficult to draw accurately with a mouse. Although rough sketches can  
be recognized, the frustration level does build. One possibility I've  
been contemplating is porting Instaviz to the MacBooks which also have  
multi-touch.
